Fred Upton’s office — took off on a 45-foot Coast Guard response boat for a one-hour tour of the damage to the coastline.They were joined by representatives of the New Buffalo Shoreline Alliance, a group of property owners who have spent tens of millions of dollars building rock walls along the shoreline to protect dunes that have been heavily eroded the past few years.“I’m encouraged,” said Ed Oldis, who has been a resident of Sunset Shores since 1982 and saw his neighbor’s house claimed by a Halloween storm in 2014.

For years, the Corps dumped tons of sand on the south side of the harbor each year to replenish what was being held back.But that program ended around 1995 when program funding was cut off.The Corps still dredges sand from New Buffalo harbor, and has identified some “funding capability” that would allow it to perform some additional dredging as well as conduct a study to determine if the harbor is contributing to the erosion problem.If that’s the case, the Corps would likely be permitted to take additional action to mitigate some of the problems that were caused by the harbor.Some of those possibilities include the construction of a bypass to allow sand to move under the harbor or a breakwater to absorb energy from the waves away from the shoreline.In the meantime, officials and residents are hopeful that they can keep the power of Mother Nature at bay with walls and other structures that the Michigan congressional delegation has urged the Army Corps to approve as rapidly as possible.Homeowners say the erosion of beaches and dunes already has had a significant impact on the value of property along much of the shoreline and that ultimately will hurt local governments that are dependent on the property taxes and spending from tourists who visit Lake Michigan.In Berrien County alone, visitor spending was estimated at $408 million in 2018, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corp., and some are worried that money could begin to dry up from that source if beaches continue to disappear.Just a bit north of New Buffalo in Chikaming Township, the stairway going down to the Pier Street Beach now leads directly to the water and the stairway at Harbert Beach was closed after it was damaged after the latest storms in October.
