Erich Ludendorff was born on 9 April 1865 near Posen in Prussia (now Poznan, Poland). He saw war as an acceptable way of diplomacy and as a way for a nation to assert its power.

In 1925, Ludendorff  stood against Hindenburg for the presidential election in Weimar Germany – but only polled 1% of the votes cast.After 1928, Ludendorff went into retirement. Their spectacular victories over the Russians at Tannenberg (1914) and at the Masurian Lakes (1915) brought Hindenburg worldwide renown - although arguably much of the credit belonged to Ludendorff. In 1916, when Hindenburg was appointed chief of staff, he made Ludendorff his quartermaster general.Hindenburg, assisted by Ludendorff, worked on the mobilisation of Germany to prosecute 'total' warfare, staking everything on the stubborn pursuit of a 'victorious peace' that would secure German gains. The resulting peace settlement, signed at Brest-Litovsk – was exceptionally harsh on the Russians.The German Spring push of 1918 on the Western Front, is sometimes known as the Ludendorff Offensive.

Quartermaster General Erich Ludendorff scheduled the beginning of Germany’s great 1918 gamble for victory on the Western Front in World War I for the first day of spring, March 21. From 1924 to 1928 he was a Nazi member of the Reichstag. After Russia's withdrawal from the war in 1917, Ludendorff played a key role in the resulting Treaty of Brest-Litovsk.In March 1918, Ludendorff launched a huge, but unsuccessful, offensive on the Western Front in attempt to defeat the Allies before the arrival of American troops.

In his later years, many believed Ludendorff to be little more than an eccentric. Here, he concluded that the world’s problems were the result of Christians, Jews and Freemasons. After the war, he briefly supported Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party. Here he wrote numerous articles that stated that the German Army had been ‘stabbed in the back’  by left wing politicians – an idea carried forward and developed by Hitler.Ludendorff returned to Germany in 1920 and got involved in right wing politics. He rejected Hitler’s offer to make him a field marshall in 1935.Ludendorff died on December 20th 1937 aged 72. As a result of this appointment, Ludendorff replaced Falkenhayn who paid the price for the German failure to take Verdun.After his appointment, Hindenburg created what was essentially a nation fully oriented to the military.
