Dissertation TitleVariations in the Use of Electronic Medical Records (EMR): Role of Socio-cultural Aspects

In this work I am using OB/GYN outpatient consulting as empirical site for examining EMR use in practice. The framing of women health exclusively from a medical perspective, discounts pre-existing social and cultural dispositions that links fertility, motherhood, conjugality, and fidelity with women’s health. The focus on biomedical framing of women health can result in variations in documenting and referring medical records within doctor-patient interactions. An exemplar of such cultural context is the outpatient consultation in the obstetrics and gynecology (OB/GYN) department.  I generate theoretical insights around gendered values integrated in healthcare, health technology and its use. The findings reveal paths to alternative and more empathetic health technologies design and use. The findings are based on a grounded theoretic analysis of ethnographic engagement with eight doctors working in four kinds of hospitals. I highlight the limitations of expecting a value-free and unemotional researcher while conducting fieldwork and data analysis.
